Why People Fail to Reach Their Goals (And How to Fix It)

Ever start a new goal—fitness, cutting back on drinking, finding a new job—and feel on fire at first? Then, slowly but surely, that initial motivation fades.

Before long, you’re back to square one.

And that’s when most people say things like, “I’m just lazy.” or “I need more willpower.”

But I’m here to tell you—it’s not about willpower. It’s not about being lazy.

It’s about structure.

You can have all the information, time, and ability, but if you don’t have the right structure to support your goals, you’ll burn out.

To make lasting change, you need to have five core elements in place.

  1. Discomfort – You have to be uncomfortable with where you are. If you’re okay with your current situation, why bother changing? Discomfort is the spark that ignites real transformation.
  2. Vision – You need specific goals, not just a vague idea. For example, saying “I want to get in shape” is a nice thought, but what does that actually mean? Does it mean running a marathon? Dropping 10lbs? Lifting a certain amount?
  3. Plan – A goal without a plan is like setting off on a road trip without a map. If you don’t have specific steps, you’ll lose momentum fast. You do not need to know all the steps, but you need to know the next step.
  4. Belief – If you don’t believe you can succeed, you won’t. You might want to start a side business, but deep down you think, “Guys like me don’t do that.” That belief keeps you stuck in inaction. Change your beliefs, and you change your outcomes.
  5. Accountability – Motivation will fade. It always does. That’s why you need accountability—whether it’s from a coach, a mentor, or a group of like-minded people. Accountability forces you to take ACTION. Without action, you won't go anywhere.

When any one of these elements is missing, motivation fades.

  • No discomfort? You’ll stay where you are.
  • No vision? You’ll feel lost, unsure if you’re even moving forward.
  • No plan? You’ll get stuck in indecision and inaction.
  • No belief? You’ll sabotage yourself before you even start.
  • No accountability? You’ll quit the second things get tough.

So, ask yourself—where do you usually get stuck? Vision? Plan? Accountability?

Identify which element is missing, and start there. You’ve got this, and I’m here to help.

Last weekend I went on the first hike of the season! Crazy to think winter is coming to an end, but I think Hucky is stoked for spring!

Till next week, be kind, be curious and work hard.
