This Is Why Life Design Matters: 30 Miles Through Glacier National Park

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about life design. In other words, not living someone else’s definition of success, but creating and living your own.

For some, that might mean a house in Connecticut and a high-powered job.

For others, it might mean a cabin in the woods with unlimited free time.

It doesn’t matter what the vision is. What matters is that it’s your vision. That you chose it, intentionally.

And it might even change down the line, which is OK.

Last week, I got a powerful reminder of why this matters.

Midday Friday, some friends asked if I wanted to join a bike ride through Glacier National Park.

Going-to-the-Sun Road is, in my very biased opinion, the most beautiful road in the world. It’s super windy, with steep drop-offs and insane views.

I've never considered riding it because with the cars, there's not a lot of room for bikes. And getting pushed off a mountain is not on my list of things to do, haha.

That being said, this time of year is the golden time for the bike ride. Cars aren’t allowed on the road yet, so you’re left with both lanes wide open and all to yourself.

While this “golden time” sounds great, a lot of things had to align for me to say “yes” to the invitation.

  1. I needed to live close enough to the Glacier Park to make it a day trip. This isn’t a big tourist season, so the only people riding the road are locals and big-time bikers (which I am definitely not)
  2. I needed the flexibility to stop working early
  3. I needed to be fit enough to rip a 30-mile bike ride out of the blue

None of these requirements happened by accident.

Living in Montana wasn’t an easy choice, but it was an intentional one.

Entrepreneurship is hard, but I chose it for the flexibility.

Being fit enough to say yes to any opportunities has been a multi-year focus.

This is life by design. And Friday, I got rewarded for it.

We saw two black bears.

We rode past jaw-dropping views.

We got a killer workout.

And today, I’m sitting here with a huge smile on my face.

Life is awesome.

Till next week, be kind, be curious and work hard.
