The Hard Truth About Becoming Your Best Self

Life is made up of different chapters.

Some of us decide to keep reliving the same one, year after year. But others choose to turn the page occasionally and begin a new chapter. They go through rebirths.

Rebirths can take many forms.

It might be a rebirth in your health.

It might be a career shift.

It might be a spiritual awakening.

No matter the form, the "old" you has to step aside to make space for the "new" you.

Let's look at an example:

Imagine you decide to prioritize your health. You want more energy, focus, and motivation. You want to live longer and look better. You want the physical strength and stamina to do things you’ve never done before.

Now, take a look at the "old" you. Maybe it looked something like this:

You were the life of the party, up late on weekends, ordering pizza at midnight. You worked out mostly to shake off the hangover, never really seeing progress.

To make a true transformation, you have to say goodbye to at least parts of that old self. You have to look in the mirror and get serious about what you want. The "old" you will not get you to where you want to go.

If you were really serious, the "new" you would trade late nights for good sleep. He would switch out cases of beer for a single glass of whiskey. He would replace midnight pizza runs with early-morning, homemade breakfasts. He would swap hungover workouts, with a consistent, intentional training plan.

This doesn't happen overnight. It’s a journey. You slowly start to work toward this "new" self, and in doing so, you’ll face challenges, both internal and external.

Internally, you will have to undergo self-reflection, and push yourself to be disciplined. Externally, people may resist your transformation. Some friends and family will remember you as your "old" self and, consciously or not, wish for you to stay the same.

Unfortunately, and uncomfortably, this might mean you have to let go of relationships, lifestyles, and mindsets that no longer serve you.

The good news? Letting go of the old makes room for new, fulfilling relationships, healthier routines, and a mindset that aligns with who you truly want to be.

So, is it hard? Absolutely.

Is it worth it? Without a doubt.

This week, Kel and I played the two-player version of Catan! It took us a few rounds (and re-reading the rules a few times), but we finally got the hang of it.

Till next week, be kind, be curious, and work hard.
