I want to take the weekend off from drinking, but what the hell do I do? I typically hang with friends and go to the bars. Am I just going to be sitting around bored all week? It might be okay to reset for one weekend, but how would I make a habit of this? Effect: I end up drinking because I don't want to miss out on anything. Strategy: Shift your focus Humans don't like change. As a result, when we first try to reduce our drinking, it's natural for us to put up our defenses. We jump to all the things we are going to miss out on. We are great at this. What we aren't as good at is identifying everything we are going to gain. We say, I'm not going to have fun at the bar, instead of, now I can go golfing, hiking, etc., this weekend. We say, I'm not going to be able to drink on the beach, instead of, I get to wake up before everyone else, enjoy the sunrise, and feel fantastic. We say, I'm going to miss the taste of a margarita, instead of, I can make a mocktail that tastes delicious because I am not trying to cover up the taste of Casamigos. We get to decide what we focus on. We can either focus on what we are giving up or all the things we gain. Outcome: When you focus on what you gain, it's easier to not drink, and you have more fun doing it. What activities do you enjoy that don’t involve drinking? Send me an email with your thoughts.
