Confession: I poisoned myself 3-4 days a week

From society’s perspective, I didn’t have a drinking problem.

  • I never blacked out
  • I drank 3-4 nights a week—“socially”
  • I made and enjoyed fancy cocktails
  • I worked out 5 days a week

On paper, everything looked fine.

But I didn’t like what was happening.

  • My sleep was inconsistent
  • I wasted entire days recovering from hangovers
  • My workouts felt like damage control
  • Alcohol turned into a crutch for boredom, unwinding, and more
  • My anxiety kept creeping up

Then I started asking myself,

"What would life look like if I drank less?"

I experimented—taking a week off here and there—and I always noticed changes

  • My sleep would improve
  • Workouts began to build on each other
  • Sunday nights were anxiety-free
  • My energy and focus skyrocketed

It became painfully clear: I was poisoning myself

Consistently, 3-4 days a week, I was undoing my progress.

So, I slowly started cutting back.

It wasn’t easy,

  • Socializing without a drink felt awkward at first
  • Friends gave me a hard time (got to love peer pressure)
  • Separating from work became a challenge

But as I found more evidence of the positive effects, momentum started building.

Little by little, I stopped feeling like I was missing out.

Socializing became easier. Dealing with stress became easier.

Now, I’ll have the occasional drink—but I’m no longer consistently poisoning myself.

My body (and my life) are thankful for that.

If you’ve ever wondered whether alcohol is holding you back, try this: spend a week as a scientist.

Cut out alcohol and observe the changes.

Sometimes, the habits we think are “normal” are the ones quietly holding us back.
