What is the biggest driver of most behaviors? To escape discomfort. Think about it. We eat when we’re hungry, bored, or sad. We drink when we’re stressed, lack confidence, or feel lonely. We scroll through social media when we’re bored, stressed, or procrastinating. In today’s world, tools to avoid discomfort are everywhere. We have phones that deliver instant dopamine. Netflix releases multiple movies and TV shows every week. We can get any kind of food delivered to our door in 30 minutes. We never have to be uncomfortable… On paper, a life with no discomfort at all sounds like a utopia, but in reality, it’s not. In this world of abundance, we are more depressed, anxious, and stressed than ever. A primary reason for this is that we can’t just sit with discomfort. In the dating scene, we hide behind screens and alcohol. We sabotage our bodies by reaching for the quickest, easiest, tastiest food. We can’t even sit on the toilet without scrolling through our phones. But here’s the thing—if we can learn to get better at being uncomfortable, everything gets better. We can date confidently, without alcohol. We can shift our diets to whole foods. We can sit still and enjoy the little things in life. So where’s the best place to start? Next time you feel uncomfortable, just notice it. You don’t have to enter a state of blissful meditation. All I want you to do is recognize the emotion. Once you start noticing how often we try to escape discomfort, you can begin to challenge it. Favorite Photo from the Week: I was walking Skye and noticed this awesome mailbox.
